Sister Alma Roy, r.h.s.j., passed away on Friday (March 25, 2011) at the infirmary of the Notre Dame de l’Assomption residence of the Religieuses Hospitalières de St. Joseph, Vallée Lourdes Drive in Bathurst at the age of 87 and 2 months, in her 67th year of religious community life.
Born in Petit-Rocher, NB, she was the daughter of the late Théodule Roy and the late Bernadette Arseneau.
Besides her congregation, she is survived by: One brother, Rodrigue (Mai Comeau) of Brossard, QC. Brother-in-law, Léo Boudreau (late Rosaline Roy) of Laval des Rapides, QC. Sister-in-law, Jeannine (Feu Napoléon Roy) of Fredericton. Several nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by 3 brothers; Napoléon, Oscar, Ronaldo, 5 sisters; Augustine, Anita, r.h.s.j., Patricia, Andréa and Rosaline.
Sister Alma Roy entered the order of the Religieuses Hospitalières de St-Joseph on September 13, 1942 and as taken her vows to the order on July 26, 1944.
Sister Alma Roy received her nursing degree at the Hôtel Dieu in Campbellton where she worked for many years. In 1964, she went to Perou where she cared for the Lepers for 9 years. Upon returning to Canada Sister Alma Roy worked with higher responsibilities at the Foyer Notre Dame de Lourdes in Bathurst and at the Villa St-Joseph-du-Lac in Yarmouth, NS She continued her religious work with the Pastoral teams at the Hôpital de l’Enfant Jésus in Caraquet and the Hôtel-Dieu in St-Quentin. As her health was diminishing, she accepted to help her colleagues at their mission in Mexico for 2 years. Consequently returning to Canada, she continued to serve for her community until 2009, when due to failing health, Sister Roy was confined to the community’s infirmary until her passing.
Visitations for Sister Alma Roy will be from 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Notre Dame de l’Assomption Residence, 2144 Vallée-Lourdes Dr. Bathurst. There will be a Prayer Virgil on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be from the Religieuses Hospitalières Chapel, on Wednesday (March 30, 2011) at 2 p.m. Visitations hours are Tuesday from 2 p.m. till 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of Funeral.
