Vera Wood

  • Vera Wood 1935-2025

  •  Date of Death: March 01, 2025
  •  Location: Bathurst

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vera Isabel (Good) Wood, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, friend, sister-in-law, and cousin who left us on March 1st, 2025, at the age of eighty-nine. Vera passed peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

Vera was born in 1935, in Salmon Beach, New Brunswick. She was the youngest daughter of the late Henry and Catherine (Scott) Good. She was predeceased by her sisters Doris Scott (Norman), Alice Chapman (Ellsworth), Florence Ronalds (Frederick), and brother Ralph.

Vera is survived by her loving husband, David (Dave) of over 66 years and a large, adoring family, including her children Darren (Wendy) Wood of Salmon Beach, Judith Wood (Michel Chamberlain) of Bathurst, Gary Wood (departed 1966). Sharon Branch (Dwayne) of Quispamsis, NB, and special niece Lois (Stephen) Hubert of Bridgewater, NS. She also has seven grandchildren: Davis, Devin, Brandon, Kurt, Taylor, Jenna, and Erin and eight great grandchildren.

Vera started her career at the Consolidated Bathurst Pulp and Paper Mill working in the Accounting and Payroll Department. She met her husband Dave at a dance where her sister Florence said, “If you don’t dance with him, I will.” She married Dave and they moved to Elliot Lake, Ontario for work. Darren and Judy were born shortly after moving to Sudbury, Ontario. In 1964, they moved back to Salmon Beach and built their forever home next to her parents. Gary and Sharon came along shortly afterward. After raising her children, Vera worked as a secretary in several local schools including Bathurst High School and Superior Middle School. She was the School Librarian at Superior and Chalmers Middle Schools before retiring in 1992.

Vera was an active member of Central United Church in Clifton. She played the organ, sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, and was a lifelong member of the UCW. When she was not singing or playing the piano, she was busy working on her handicrafts or cooking. She especially loved to have a house full of family or friends to entertain, but she also would not hesitate to take the time to show someone how to crochet or sew. She had a unique talent of making everyone that crossed her path feel welcome and appreciated. Vera’s memory and humour will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her and will inspire strength, kindness, and generosity in those whose lives she had touched. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Special thanks to her personal support workers who treated her with such love and care, Nurse Practitioner Martha Vickers for her compassion, Extra Mural for their support, and the thoughtfulness of her neighbours, friends, and church community especially over the past few years.

Donations can be made in her memory to Central United Church in Clifton, NB or to the charity of your choice.

A private graveside service is planned for this summer, with details to be shared at a later date.

Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst, NB.
