Bathurst - Robert Jardine Potts Keswick, passed away peacefully at his home in Bathurst on Thursday (April 24, 2008) with his wife Norma M. (Gosnell) and daughter Lynn at his side. Mr. Keswick was born on Oct. 28, 1915 in Fort Kent, Maine, the son of the late John Jardine and Isabel Gardiner (Kelly) Keswick. He was pre-deceased by a brother; Murray McLaren Keswick. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Along with his wife Norma, he is survived by: One daughter: Lynn (Dr. Paul) Steenburg of Geneva, Indiana, USA Two grandchildren: Dr. Scott (Summer) Steenburg and Jennifer (Waylan) Niece. Bob was a graduated of Hartland Superior School, Class of 1933 and the University of New Brunswick, Class of 1937, Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He joined Bathurst Power and Paper Company in June 1937 until he enlisted in the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in Sept. 1940. He served in numerous areas of training throughout Canada. Bob was one of the first four Canadian Army Officers to attend the RCAF War Staff Course. He served overseas as an Air Liaison Officer attached to a Polish wing of the RAF followed by joining a Norwegian wing. He also served with an RAF Photographic intelligence wing. His final appointment was GSO III Air Liaison for the Canadian Army until he returned to Canada in Dec. 1945. He had attained the rank of Major. Bob returned to work with the Bathurst Power & Paper as chief chemist, then General Superintendent prior to becoming Mill Manager from 1954 to 1970. He was transferred to the company’s head office in Montreal as assistant technical director. Upon early retirement in 1971, he worked for three other company’s; Irving Pulp & Paper in Saint John, NB, Labrador Linerboard in Stephenville, NF, and Stadler Hurter, and American company out of North Carolina. He played and active part with the technical section of the Canadian Pulp & Paper Association. He was a life member of that association, as well as a past president for the Paper Industry Management Association. Mr. Keswick was an active community leader which included chairing First United Church Finance committee, past president of the Bathurst Board of Trade, Past Master of Lodge St. John, No. 27, F&AM of the Masonic Order, president of the Bathurst Curling Club, Board of Directors and honorary life member of the Gowan Brae Golf & Country Club, as well as several years on the Executive of the Herman J. Good, V.C. Br. 18, Royal Canadian Legion, Bathurst. Mr. Keswick chaired the citizen committee seeking a new hospital for Bathurst in the mid 1960’s, eventually leading to the opening of the Chaleur Regional Hospital in 1972 when he became the first Board Chairman. Bob was an avid fly fisherman, enjoyed hunting, curling, golf, duplicate bridge, reading and music. He was past president and honorary life member of both Bathurst duplicate bridge clubs. Bob was always a gentleman and will be missed by his family and many friends. The body will rest after 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst. Funeral Service will be held on Monday afternoon (April 28, 2008) at 2:00 p.m. from the First United Church, St. Patrick St., Bathurst, with Rev. Keith Adams officiating. Burial will be in the Highland View Cemetery, later in the spring. Visiting hours are Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
