Bathurst - Earl John Ross, 89, of the Robert L. Knowles Veterans Unit, Bathurst, passed away on Thursday (November 5, 2009) at the Robert L. Knowles Veterans Unit, Bathurst.
Born in Newport, NS, he was the son of the late Melvin and Agnes (Brown) Ross.
He served in the North Nova Scotia Highlanders during World War II in England and Europe. Landed in France on D-Day and returned to Canada at the end of the War. He was awarded the Oak Leaf and mentioned in Dispatches for bravery. Following the War, he worked as a miner in Newfoundland, Elliott Lake, ON, Walton, NS and Bathurst, NB. He also worked as the caretaker at the First United Church, Bathurst. He retired and moved to Cheverie, NS and spent the last years in Halifax. He served as an Elder at the First United Church, Bathurst, and also Cheverie United Church. He was also one of the original members of the A.O.T.S. Men's Club of Cheverie United Church. He also served on the Executive of the Herman J. Good, V.C. Br. 18, Royal Canadian Legion, Bathurst.
He was pre-deceased by his wife, Florence (Forsythe) Ross.

He was pre-deceased by brothers; Morris, Melvin and Burton.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from Elhatton's Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst, from 2 to 4 only. Funeral Service will be held on Monday morning (November 9, 2009) at 11:00 a.m. from the First United Church, St. Patrick St., Bathurst. Burial will be in the Avonview Cemetery, Kempt Shore, NS. Donations in memory of Earl may be made to the Kidney Foundation or a favorite charity.
