1936 - 2012
Donald Thomas Furlotte, aged 76, of Bathurst, NB loving husband to Rollande Furlotte for 53 years and Father to Wendy Murphy (Ron McKay) of Bathurst, Sandra Furlotte of St. Petersburg, Florida, Karen Richard (Marc) of Bathurst and Darren Furlotte (Michelle) of Sydney, Australia passed away suddenly in his home on Wednesday, June the 6th.
Born in Jacquet River to Rozanne Miller and Thomas Furlotte, Don spent his years primarily in the mining industry with some early years in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was a member of the Canadian Legion. Don was the truest definition of a self-taught man, continuously seeking out learning opportunities; there was not much that he had not learned. He had a great love of astronomy and sailing and as an instructor was a strong advocate of the Power Squadron program and the knowledge and skills it provides. He was instrumental in the original planning and development of the Bathurst Marina. He was a fantastic researcher, debater, historian, and loved to write, garden and travel. He believed strongly in truth through knowledge.
Jokingly he would often state: "Nobody’s perfect except the captain."
A very private man, his focus was always his family. He was very proud of the adults his own children have become. His grandsons Michael Murphy, Patrick Murphy and Robert Murphy and granddaughters Rebecca Richard and Kathleen Richard meant the world to him and were the source of his greatest pride. The loss of his grandson Patrick was his greatest sadness.
He was the last surviving member of his family. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Alvin and Melvin, and a sister Catherine
He will be very sadly missed by everyone.
Visitation will be at Elhatton's Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com) from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Monday, June 11 2012. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11am from the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bathurst. Donations in memory of Donald may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
