Bathurst - The death of Hugh Parrott, of Munro St., Bathurst, occurred Sunday (September 12, 2004) at Chaleur Regional Hospital after an illness of two months. Born in New Bandon, may 14, 1915, he was a son of the late Mark and Mae (Hodnett) Parrott and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Following his early education he attended business college in Moncton where he studied accounting. He was employed at an East Bathurst grocery store owned by Claude Buttimer until he enlisted in the Carleton York Regiment in 1939 at the beginning of the Second World War. Following training in Woodstock he went overseas to Aldershot and transferred to the Provost Corps. He returned home in 1946 after post-war service in Holland. For more than 30 years he was employed by George Eddy Company Ltd, retiring as office manager. During this time he completed further studies through the Canadian Credit Institute. During an active life in the community he held various positions in First United Church, Past President, was for many years on the board of directors of Bathurst Curling Club and treasurer of what is now the Bathurst Association of Community Living. More recently he was longtime treasurer of Bay Chaleur Manor in Janeville. He was an active member of Herman J. Good V.C. Branch # 18, Royal Canadian Legion and until recently served as auditor each year for the Ladies Auxiliary to the branch He was a regular visitor at the Robert L. Knowles Veterans Unit and was awarded the Legion's meritorious service medal in 1997. Through the years he attended Dominion Conventions of the Royal Canadian Legion in Manitoba and Alberta and enjoyed a return to Europe in 1964, fishing trips to Newfoundland, family visits to western Canada and California and a trip to Bermuda following retirement. His other activities included golfing, curling, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed many fine times 'up the 44' in the 44 Mile Brook area of Nepisiguit River headwaters. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Laura (Ronalds) Parrott; A son: Trevor (Carol) of Phoenix, Arizona; Two daughters:Joan Quade of Calgary and Brenda (David Morisson) of Winnipeg; Two Grandsons: George and Robert Quade of Calgary, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers: Edgar, Raymond and Vibert Parrott and by sisters: Maude Parrot and Vera Murray. The body is resting at Elhatton Funeral Home, St-George Street where a Legion service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at First United Church. Interment will be in Highland View Cemetery, Bridge Street. If desired donations may be made to First United Church or to a charity of choice.
