Big River - Derwyn Scott, 67, passed away on Monday January 19, 2015 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst. Born in Clifton, he was a son of the late Thomas and Blanche (Knowles) Scott.
Derwyn was employed with Smurfit-Stone Container for 41 years before retiring.
Besides his wife, May (Branch) Scott, he is survived by two sons: Blair (Shelley) of Big River, N.B. and Bradley (Angela) of Salisbury, N.B.
Six grandchildren: Krisanne, Kendra, Sandi, Chadd, Cole and Jessie.
Five brothers: Greg (John) of Halifax, N.S., Haines (Betty) of Big River, N.B., Gordon (Kay) of Clifton, N.B., Stephen (Kathy) of Bathurst and Brent (Janet) of Glassville, N.B.
One sister-in-law, Holly Scott of Salmon Beach; one brother-in-law, Roger Jagoe of Clifton, N.B., several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Derwyn was predeceased by a brother, Nelson and a sister, Sandra "Dolly".
When he moved to Big River in 1967, Derwyn became very involved in his community. Derwyn could be found as a leader, for Scouts Canada and coaching and playing soft ball and hockey. He was past president of the Big River Community Association; he served many years as a volunteer fire fighter and Fire Chief of the St. Anne Regional Fire Department. He also was an elected member of the Local Service District. Derwyn was an outdoors enthusiast. He could often be found hunting, fishing, carpentry and spending time with each of his boys at their camps.
The body will rest after 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday January 22, 2015 at 2 p.m. from the First United Church, St. Patrick St., Bathurst.
Visiting hours are Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
Donations in memory of Derwyn can be made to the First United Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
