Bathurst - Melvin "Newf" Harris of Bathurst, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2017 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst, at the age of 73.
Born in Corner Brook N.L., he was the son of the late Chesley and Verdie (Parsons) Harris.
Melvin worked Mining for most of his life and received a Medal of Bravery at Westray Mine Disaster, Nova Scotia in 1992. He was a member of Knights of Columbus 3rd degree and he enjoyed bowling and shuffleboard.
He is survived by four daughters: Sharon Harris (James Fraser) of P.E.I., Linda Harris (Guy Lanteigne) of Allardville, Suzan Harris (Gerry Lemond) of Bathurst, Joanne Harris (Donnald Dibblee) of Rothesay, N.B.
Five grandchildren: Kevin, Jonathan, Amanda, Jason and Jenny-Lynn and seven great-grandchildren.
A special friend, Rose Roy of Bathurst.
Two brothers: Sam of Corner Brook, N.L. and Ron of Brampton, Ont. Two sisters: Julie Harris of Corner Brook, N.L. and Hazel Spencer-Boetler of Minnesota, U.S.A. Several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, Yvonne (King) Harris, he was predeceased by one son, Ronald and one brother, Cyril.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 11 am from the Holy Family Church, Bathurst. Donation in memory of Melvin may be made to the Lung Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a favorite charity.
