John Henry Paul Jr. (Flying Eagle), former Chief of Ge'goapsgog (Pabineau) First Nation passed away suddenly at the age of 58 on July 26 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital. He is survived by: his son; Sasha John Paul, daughter-in-law; Sheila Morgan-Paul, his grand daughter; Emily of Oromocto, his daughter; Barbara Paul, son-in-law; Joey Calderone and grandchildren; Romona and Giovanni of Ge'goapsgog. He boxed and trained upcoming fighters locally for many years and wrestled briefly in the US. A boxing club was started in Ge'goapsgog “Flying Eagle Boxing Club” in 2004 to honor his legacy as a boxer. He received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 during his term as Chief for Ge'goapsgog for his service to his community. John received post secondary schooling from Atlantic Baptist College (Moncton) and Mount St. Vincent University (Halifax). During this period he was a part-time pastor at various Protestant churches in the region. He was also one of the original members of the Pabineau Braves baseball team and played on the Atlantic Baptist Hockey team. He continued the Paul family tradition of armed service for our Country when he briefly served in the logistical core after WWII and rose to the rank of Corporal. Throughout his life he worked as an accomplished nursery/landscaper, native logger, carpenter, and truck driver in the U.S.A. and Canada. John was involved in reviving his strong Mi'gmag culture with fellow community members by starting up and becoming the drum keeper of the Rolling Thunder Drum Group of Ge'goapsgog. He is survived by three sisters and two brothers: Mary Elizabeth McBain of Eel River Bar, Gloria Jean Britt of Connecticut, Joseph Gil Peter-Paul of New Jersey, Dorothy Lorden, and Benjamin P. Paul Sr. both of Ge'goapsgog as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeased by his parents the late Christianne and John Paul Sr., wife Barbara Mary Paul, siblings Norman Peter-Paul, Rita M. Sumski, Helen M. Fraser, and Theresa Halka. He was known by many different names: Chief, Junior, Flying Eagle, Johnny Lone Eagle, Father, Poppy, Granpy, and a respected Elder. He was loved by all and will be deeply missed. A celebration of John's life will be held at Bayview Baptist Church on July 30 at 2 p.m. He is resting at his daughters home, 1344 Pabineau Falls Road, with visitation being arranged through Elhatton's Funeral Home. www.elhatton.com.
