Bathurst - Sarah Edna 'Tedda' Vivian Ellis
The death of Edna 'Tedda' Ellis, of North Tetagouche and formerly of Bathurst, age 100, occurred Wednesday (December 7, 2005) at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst, following a short illness.
Born in Bathurst on August 31, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Godfrey and Alice (Spear) Ellis.
Edna is survived by nieces:
Charlotte Welsh (Richard) of Park City, Utah
Susan Caufman (John) of Clifton Park, NY
Nancy Bither (Stewart) of East Boothbay, Maine
She is also survived by a cousin Allan Spear of Bathurst
Several great nieces and nephews.
Edna enjoyed a career as a teacher and had a positive influence of many young lives. She retired in 1964 after teaching for 35 years at Bathurst High School and received special recognition for being the only teacher to have taught for that length of time in the same school. Sufficient qualified teachers could not be found for the following year and Edna was asked to teach for an additional year. Edna was a devoted and life long member of Saint George's Anglican Church, a member of Saint George's Altar Guild and a founding member of Saint George's Guild. She was a charter member of Nicolas Denys Chapter IODE for 70 years until the chapter closed and she transferred her membership to the Gloucester chapter IODE. She has held many offices in the New Brunswick Provincial Chapter and Primary Chapter. The Gloucester Chapter IODE and the New Brunswick Retired Teachers Association, each named yearly scholarships in her honor on her 100th birthday. Edna was a founding member of the New Brunswick Retired Teachers Association. Edna's love of traveling took her on many trips to Europe, England and many parts of the United States. She has a zest for life and remained interested in family, friends and her community until the past month.
Edna was predeceased by her sister Eleanor Branch (John Everett) and a brother Donald (Ella Payne).
There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday morning (December 10, 2005) at 11:00 a.m. from Saint George's Anglican Church, King Ave., Bathurst, with Rev. Roderick Black officiating. A reception will be held following the service.
In Edna's memory, donations to Saint George's Anglican Church or a memorial of choice would be appreciate. Interment will be in spring. Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton's Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.
