Donald Olaf Nelson, loving husband of Lola (Beck) Nelson, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2023 at Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst at the age of 88.

Born in Lower Caledonia, NS, he was the son of the late Olaf (Ole) and Alice (Ross) Nelson.

Besides his wife of 45 years, he is survived by his son Brent (Kerry) Nelson of Bathurst, NB and his daughter Heather (Matthew) Snow of Saint John, NB, his grandchildren Liam, Elliot, Elijah, Anna and Peyton, his sisters Jessie MacDonald and Marg (Jack) Morrison, and several nieces and nephews.

Other than his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Chad Nelson (2013), brothers Albert (Karen) Nelson and Calvin Nelson, sister June (Kenneth) MacLean and brother-in-law William (Billy) MacDonald.

Growing up in Lower Caledonia, NS, Don began working for Eddy’s as a young man. His career brought him to Northern NB in 1959 where he worked in several branches. He retired from their head office after a rewarding career of 45+ years.

Don was a long-time member of First United Church and served on several committees within the church. He was involved in many other organizations such as Dalhousie Rotary Club (President), DRHS badminton coach, Scout Canada Leader, President of Bathurst Minor Baseball and recipient of the Dalhousie Centennial Award.

Don’s kindness, compassion and humility were known and appreciated by all. He took great pride in raising and supporting his family, travelling from one extra-curricular event to the next. He was often found standing along the fence at the baseball field cheering on his sons and later his grandsons.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held on Monday, May 8th, 2023 at 11 a.m. from the First United Church, St. Patrick St.

In lieu of flowers, due to fragrance sensitivities, donations in memory of Don may be made to the First United Church or a charity of your choice.
