February 18, 1920 ~ February 06, 2006 After a long and fruitful journey, John F. Goyette's life peacefully came to an end at the age of 85 at the Robert Knowles Veteran Care home on February 06 following five years of convalescent care. Born at Saint Jean Iberville, Quebec to Wilfred and Hermine Goyette on February 18, 1920, following his studies he enlisted for military service in world war two with the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in Sydney Nova Scotia and Iceland with the Atlantic Canadian Bomber Command, retired from the services with the rank of Sergeant. An entrepreneur with an extensive business career, Mr. Goyette and his wife Helen and family moved to Bathurst in May of 1960 at which time Mr. Goyette established a Photographic Studio known as Drago Photo. Mr. Goyette was predeased by his wife Helen Dragatis Goyette in March of 1982. Mr. Goyette was well known in the Bathurst region for his community spirit, his passion for politics and renowned for his organizational skills. In the early 60's, Mr. Goyette co-founded the Air Force Wing, the Bathurst Fish and Game Association, National Rifle Association, the Bathurst Mental Health Association, Camp Watch and was foremost known for his work with the Knights of Columbus where he was both the Grand Knight of the Third Degree Assembly and the Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree. Mr. Goyette assisted in establishing numerous new charters for the Knights and was honored on many occasions on a national and international level. Mr. Goyette was actively involved with the Bathurst Liberal Association and in 1966 Mr. Goyette tried his hand at municipal politics. Mr. Goyette will best be remembered by many for his work with the youth of the community and a small establishment called the Bathurst Teen Center where youth in the mid-sixties met and socialized to the sounds of the latest songs on the juke box while sharing treats sold at this establishment. Mr. Goyette organized youth dances where the youth of the community could meet and socialize. These dances were held at both the K of C hall and the Legion and were a treat for all the youth during this period of time and were seen as a catalyst which established cultural, religious and linguistic youth harmony in the community. Mr. Goyette was actively involved at many leadership levels in many other organizations such as the Royal Canadian Legion, United Commercial Travelers and organized many unprecedented joint events between the Knights of Columbus and the Orange Lodge in Bathurst. Mr. Goyette is survived by his two sons, both of Bathurst, Richard (spouse the former Ginette Bosse of Edmunston) and Marcel, (spouse, former Julie Anne Theriault) and one daughter Carole the spouse of James Sisk., of Bathurst. Two brother; Ivan of Iberville, Que., Gabriel (Murielle) of Montreal, Que., and a sister, Cécile Tessier (Gaston) of Saint Sauveur, Que. Mr. Goyette has nine grandchildren and six great grand children, several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday morning (February 11, 2006) at 11:00 a.m. from Elhatton's Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst, with Rev. Wesley Wade officiating. Contributions to the Bathurst Alzheimer's society would be gratefully accepted in his name. Most sincere thanks are extended to the wonderful care givers at the Robert Knowles Veteran's Wing who made Mr. Goyette's later years so comfortable and warm, along with the wonderful staff and Physicians at the Regional Hospital
