Betty Mary (Ward) Gammon, formerly of Bathurst passed away peacefully in Comox, BC, on January 27, 2010 in her 87th year. Betty was born in Egham, Surrey, England on November 17, 1923, the daughter of the late Sidney and Florence (Hayes) Ward. During the war she served with No. 2 Company Camberley as a driver. She immigrated to Canada as a war bride in 1946. She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence "Nib" Gammon (2008), her brother Jack, sisters Pat, Vera and Jean, and grandson Glenn. She is survived by her sister, Wynne, of Nottinghamshire, England, her sons, Michael (Heather) of Belleville, ON, Peter (Edie) of Bathurst, NB, Clive (Andrea), of Courtenay, BC and 8 grandchildren. Also surviving are brother-in-law, Bill Gammon, sisters-in-law, Helen Cooper, June MacKenzie, Jan, Gladys, and Mary Gammon. Betty was an accomplished pianist. She taught music lessons privately in her home and was affiliated with the Bathurst Music Festival during those years. At various times in her life, she was a member of the IODE, the Royal Canadian Legion, the War Brides Association and the Bathurst Curling Club. She enjoyed playing bridge and a good game of Scrabble. She particularly enjoyed summers at the family cottage at Youghall Beach. She attended St. George's Anglican Church, where she had been a member of the Altar Guild. Her family would especially like to thank the caring and supportive doctors and staff of the Dialysis Unit at the Chaleur Regional Hospital where Betty underwent treatment for almost 9 years. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday (April 27, 2010) from St. George’s Anglican Church, King Ave., Bathurst at 2 p.m. The family would appreciate donations to the Kidney Foundation of Canada-NB, 42 Durelle St., Suite 2, Fredericton, or the charity of your choice.
