Bathurst - The death of Katharine Alma Archibald, 97, formerly of Bathurst, occurred Saturday, September 18, 2004, at the McNair Manor in Riverview, after a brief illness. Alma was born in Shannonvale, Restigouche County, July 9, 1907, a daughter of the late Hugh and Alice (Lindsay) Archibald. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. During her long life she also resided in South Tetagouche, Point La Nim and Bathurst, moving to the Moncton area almost a year ago. While in South Tetagouche, she was a member of the Women's Institute and sang in the choir at South Tetagouche United Church. In earlier years she attended Church in Eel River Crossing and Dalhousie and most recently at First United Church in Bathurst for 10 years. As a nanny she was especially fond of children. She took great pleasure in relating amusing stories about this younger generation. Having lived through two World Wars and the Great Depression, she was able to recount interesting stories of the last century. Her keen and remarkable memory served her well even during the last years of her life. Traveling and geneology were two of her prime interests. Among the survivors are nieces Isabel MacLaggan and Sybil Hills of Bathurst and Roberta Bunker (Fred) of Moncton, many grandnephews, grandnieces and their families. Besides her parents, she was pre-deceased by two sisters, Elsie and Irene and three brothers, Wesley, Robert and James. The body will rest after 2:00 p.m. Monday at Elhatton's Funeral Home, 187 St. George St., Bathurst, with visiting hours from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Funeral Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday (September 21, 2004) from the First United Church, St. Patrick St., Bathurst. Interment will be in the New Mills Cemetery on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. If desired, donations may be made to the First United Church, Bathurst, or to a charity of choice.
