Sister Theresa (Marie Thomas) Salter, 86, died at Caritas Residence in Halifax, on October 13, 2013. Born in Bathurst, N.B. she was the only child of Thomas and Blanche (Gagnon) Salter. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, on August 15, 1944 and made her final profession on August 15, 1953.
Sister Theresa received a B. Sc. EI. Ed. and a B.A. from Mount St. Vincent University and later received a B. Ed. from the University of New Brunswick. She began her teaching ministry in Glace Bay, N.S. from 1947 to 1963, then was missioned to Yarmouth from 1963 to 1965. She then moved to Dartmouth where she taught from 1965 to 1970.
That year, Sister Theresa was sent to her home area, Bathurst and ministered there from 1970 to 1981. In 1981-1982 she spent a sabbatical year at the Galilee Institute of Renewal in Arnprior, Ont. In 1982 she became a staff member of the Renewal Center at the Motherhouse and then engaged in prayer ministry, spiritual direction and retreats at the Seton House of Prayer in Summerland, B.C. until 1985.
At the end of that year, she became the coordinator of the Mother Berchmans Residence at the Motherhouse in Halifax where she continued to reside and minister to the needs of sisters. In 2008, Sister Theresa moved to Caritas Residence in Halifax where she remained until her death.
In her later years, Sister Theresa worked in the Sisters of Charity Archives doing research and formulating various bits of information into easy-to-read materials until her illness made it impossible for her to continue.
Sister Theresa is survived by several devoted cousins.
The body will be in Caritas Residence in Halifax with visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2013.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2013, in the Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, N.S.
