Patricia Maher passed away over two months ago on October 13, 2024. A Celebration of Life for her will be held on Thursday, December 26th from 3 to 5 PM at the Bathurst Curling Club, 209 St. Andrews Street in the upstairs lounge. All are welcome. Her obituary published shortly after her death follows:

Bathurst - In loving memory of Patricia (Taylor) Maher, formerly of Elm Ct., Bathurst, beloved wife of Robert Maher, who passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024, at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst. She was two days shy of her 91st birthday.

Great organizing skills, a strong work ethic and tireless volunteerism made Patsy a pillar of the community and a fixture at church suppers, bridge games, junior golf tournaments and curling bonspiels. She received many accolades over her long life but none captured the care and concern she had for others (especially the young!) more than her respect laden title of “Mother Maher”.

Mom placed little value on material things and found limitless joy just socializing with family and friends. She knew the secret of simple pleasures like berry picking, letter writing and gardening. She knew the importance of children being active and sportive. And blessed were those who showed an interest in her passions of golf, curling or bridge. A natural teacher, her “students” invariably were transfixed by her kind, calm demeanor and infectious enthusiasm.

While raising 5 children she managed to work part time as a nurse (going to work was a break, she’d often say:)), she won 7 provincial curling titles and attended as many national competitions, she had a 15-golf handicap collecting a closet full of trophies and loved the occasional weekend long bridge tournament. In 1998, she was inducted into the Bathurst Sports Hall of Fame.

Mom was deeply attached to her roots in Youghall, going back now over seven generations and two hundred years to the area’s original settlers. It gave her great solace to know that her children and grandchildren will continue to thrive and appreciate the wonders of Youghall beach and the family farmland nearby. It is a place we all hold dear to our hearts!

The family would like to thank their mother and grandmother for her unsurpassed example of what a good person can be. Thanks for creating a peaceful and welcoming
home. Thanks for accepting us as we are. Thanks for introducing us to the joy of being active and all its therapeutic benefits. Thanks for showing us adventure and being unintimidated by the unknown. Thanks for being there when we needed support. Thanks for launching us all into successful lives. We were so fortunate to have had you in our presence for so long.

Patsy was the daughter of the late Harold and Marion Taylor. She is survived by 2 sisters Phyllis and Peggy, by her five children, Blake (Sabine) of Bathurst, Ann (Steve) of Montreal, Kelly of Bathurst, John (Sally), and Kerry (Ben) of Halifax, NS. She was also adored by her grandchildren, Kelsey, Taylor, Jessica, Stefanie, Rob, Kathleen, Xavier, Jonah and Hugo and great-grandchildren Quinn and Cynthia.
