With sadness we, the family, announce the passing of Arthur Smith Jr, born New Bandon in 1931, Junior passed away on October 29, 2021 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 89.

He was the son of the late Arthur and Reta (Jagoe) Smith.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Melba Smith.

He is also survived by his children: Nora Graham (Scott), Hughie Smith (Eileen), Hadley Smith (Rhonda), grandchildren Erinn, Becky, Derick, Matthew, Adam, Sarah and Carolyn and 14 great-grandchildren. Junior is survived by siblings Leona and Harry Smith.

He was predeceased by two brothers: Harper and Hales Smith and by sisters: Neta Hicks, Rhoda Scott, Twila Ayer, Shirley Ayer and Betty Miller.

Junior spent many working years as a papermaker at the Smurfit Stone Pulp and Paper Mill. He also enjoyed spending his time with his close companion and brother, Hales, as a farmer, fisherman, and woodsman. Family and friends remember Junior fondly for his sense of humour, his work ethic and enjoyment of Melba’s home cooking.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at 1 pm from Elhatton Funeral Chapel, (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst. Burial to follow in New Bandon Cemetery. Proof of double vaccination, a government issued ID and masks are required to attend the service. Donations in memory of Junior may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
