Allan Maxwell Spear, 88, of King Ave., Bathurst, passed away on Monday (January 29, 2007) at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst. Born in Sussex, he was the only child of the late Joseph and Jane (Nelson) Spear. Allan was a graduate from the Business College in Saint John. He served in World War II with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada, Continental Europe and North Africa. Flying a Spitfire mission in North Africa, his engine gave out and he was forced to land his plane behind German lines. He was captured as a POW and later escaped in September 1943. After the war, he worked at the former Consolidated Bathurst Paper Mill as a Comptroller and was a member of the Company's Quarter Century Club. He was a Past President and life member of the Herman J. Good, V.C. Br. 18, Royal Canadian Legion, Bathurst, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Past member of the Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club and the Bathurst Curling Club. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Lois (MacMinn) Spear. He is survived by: Three daughters: Dianne Beaufoy (Stephen) of Halifax, NS Jennifer Goodine (Lloyd) of Fort McMurray, AB Lesley Hoyt (James) of Fredericton 7 grandchildren; Susan, Robyn, Erin, Emma, Isabelle, Grace, Kate, 3 great-grandchildren; Mika, Moira and Iris. The will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday (February 10, 2007) at 2:00 p.m. from the First United Church, St. Patrick St. Burial will be in the United Church Cemetery, South Tetagouche, in the spring.
